PLEASE send in blood samples of any GSP that you own or
bred that has had seizures or that you suspect has had seizures in addition to any of their littermates,
parents, etc., that you also have access to. This is the only
way a genetic marker will be found so that breeders can make
smarter breeding choices to eliminate this terrible disease!
This research study GUARANTEES CONFIDENTIALITY of your name and
any dogs names that are submitted. Don't hide seizures,
the breed you love will suffer.
Things
we as breeders can do to make a serious effort to avoid producing
epilepsy:
-
Wait
to breed stud dogs and brood bitches until they are 3 or 4
years old. Most GSP's will start having seizures before
they are 4 years old. If we wait to breed, we can
prevent litters of epileptic parents from being
conceived.
-
Talk
about it. Inform owners of littermates to any epileptic
dog. Inform other breeders who may have used a dog that
produced it.
-
Send
blood samples of affected dogs and their littermates, parents,
and grandparents to research at the University of
Missouri. The more information they have, the faster
they can get us answers.
